Hi Lee!
The software looks great, but I’ve heard that “forced” opt-ins can really tick some people off and may lead to negative feedback on eBay. They figure the opt-in wasn’t “part of the deal.” What do you think–will customers get angry if they have to do this to open their book?
Thanks,
Marnie
Hi Marnie
This is a good point, and I plan to blog about this at the weekend. I never force the optin, as I think it’s bad for business. When using this software, I have a workaround.
When the user clicks the ‘register’ button it will take them to the opt in form. I will have an enticing optin box, and a link underneath saying ‘click here to get the code’.
The user can opt in to get the code, or click the link. If the optin box is enticing enouth, most will decide to receive your newsletter.
This way 80%+ will opt in, but you’re still not forcing those to join your list who don’t want to. You’re presenting choices to the user, and that has to be a good thing.
Most people force the optin with the $7 script, but I bucked the trend and gave a link saying ‘click here if you don’t want to join my list’. Because the optin box was so delicious (!!) 90% still joined my list.
As soon as I have a working example up I’ll post a blog post.
What does everyone else think….

Lee, I bought Boomerang a little while ago, and I agree in principle about not forcing people to sign up. That may be true for Ebay, but if you have a report and people say they want it, I feel that they should be aware that it’s something want then there has to be a cost, even if it’s their email address.
The other problem is that if people pay a small fee for the product be it a pdf or software, they can distribute that file around the World and you won’t build a list so quickly. I wouldn’t but you probably could lol.
My two pennies. I’m probably wrong. I am in the camp that needs subscribers
