Is The Marketing Grass Always Greener?

Today was the first day of back to school after the Christmas holidays in the UK, and I must admit that it felt strange not heading to a class full of grumpy teenagers this morning.

Even though I’ve been a full time marketer since September, it still feels a bit odd not to be going back to school at the end of the holidays. Lots of my friends are still teachers, and being in the classroom has made an impression on me that will last a lifetime, and so it’s to be expected that the fact that I’m not heading to the chalkface in the mornings will feel a bit peculiar.

I loved being a teacher, and once I have better systems in my business, I’m going to try and volunteer a bit more at the local schools. Internet Marketing full time is an amazing experience, but I have to be honest and say that there’s a huge part of me that does miss helping so many children on a daily basis.

Despite my love of the classroom I still wouldn’t change anything of course. If I was to work for a living, then I can’t think of any line of work that would provide me with more satisfaction and stimulation than encouranging and motivating hundreds of children each and every day.

If I were to have a job for a living, then there’s no question that job would be as a teacher, but I love working for myself so much that I doubt I’d ever give this up. Ideally, it’s my goal to run my business full time, while also volunteering in half a dozen schools across the borough one or two days per week.

When I was a teacher it was my absolute burning ambition to become a full time marketer, and the desire to do so was what pushed me to work harder than ever before. Now that I’m no longer a teacher I do of course miss the satisfaction that my old job provided.

I guess the purpose of this post is to advise you to try and distance yourself from the marketing hype which tries to make you believe that the grass is always greener on the other side. Becoming a full time internet marketer, and working from home, is a lifestyle like no other and I’m eternally grateful each and every day for the situation I find myself in.

But if I could go back a few months then I’d make sure that I appreciated the enjoyment that my working present provided, rather than constantly dreaming of the marketing future.

If you want to succeed online then you do need to have your eyes firmly fixed on the future, but please make sure you enjoy the present as well.

    Hi Lee, Love your blog! I too just gave up my full time position to try ‘Internet Marketing’ full-time. Mixed success so far, but hey, it takes time to get going. Love where you write

    Hi Bec and thanks for the post!

    You’re right that it does take time to get going, and nothing happens overnight. Building any business is a long term process, but it’s certainly a fun journey.

    It feels good to work from home doesn’t it?!

    I was watching my neighbours go to work this morning and the weather was horrid, and I was sat at my warm PC earning money. Not a bad way to spend a day!

    I can certainly understand why you would feel that way as teaching must be extremely rewarding. I always really valued my teachers & still do (The good ones at an rate!) as some of the most important people in my life.

    For me personally, I’ve never had a job that has been rewarding either personally or financially. I attended the prestigious Lancaster Royal Grammar School but my talents were in music & I fell into retail/sales to fit it around touring with my band.

    I always felt that I’d let myself down as most of my schoolfriends are now surgeons, lawyers, doctors, biochemists or own their own software or motorsport companies etc - you get the idea! There I was selling computers for a living. :)

    In actuality this is part of what drives me now as an internet marketer. Though I’m only in the early stages of my career online, I feel I have found something that suits my personality & skill base. I feel I have found my niche - pardon the pun!

    I can understand how teaching is not quite the same online but you have one pupil here that really values your efforts! ;)

    Hi John and thanks for the nice comments. :)

    I still love teaching, but in reality it doesn’t come close to what I’m doing now in terms of daily enjoyment.

    It’s also easy to look back with rose tinted glasses when I’m not in the trenches (erm I mean classroom!) daily.

    Knowing you from the Standing Start Profit forums I too think you’ve found something that you can excel at, and I’m 100% sure that you will do just that.

    As for your friends all being lawyers and doctors…

    I did a law degree and many of my friends are now earning a fortune and enjoying a really succesful career.

    But you should see how jealous they look when I turn up for an end of work drink, unshaven and looking as scruffy as someone who no longer has to dress to impress can do.

    Let’s just say that if you make a success of this (and you will), then they’ll be the ones feeling left behind. :)
