New Free Webinar Software

by Lee McIntyre on May 8, 2008

I’ve just stumbled across some pretty cool Webinar software that I wanted to share.

It’s called DimDim and is absolutely packed with the kind of features you’d need from some reliable webinar software.

It uses VOIP technology (like Skype) meaning you can share your screen with people attending the webinar, and they can also contribute via voice without having to call in on a seperate phone number.

What I really like about DimDim is that people can attend your webinars without having to download any extra software, and it also works well on Macs too.

And best of all it’s FREE to use!

The free version does have some limitations, but the upgrade cost is VERY reasonable for this type of service.

Sadly it does come with a major drawback though because it doesn’t yet have the ability to record your webinars, though I read this is to be added soon.

Anyway, I spent ages looking for some Webinar software so I wanted to share. If you have any alternative suggestions please let me know in the comments below…

Oooo, THANKS Lee!

I’ll check it out tomorrow and see what it’s like! This could prove to be VERY useful, and I can see a few people trying it out.

Thanks
Mark

Excellent tip Lee!!

Yes, the major drawback is the inability to record the webinar.

You may be able to work around that if you record your screen using Camtasia while you are doing the webinar. Haven’t tried but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to.

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

Hi Jason – nice idea about recording with Camtasia!

Hi Steve – do you have an eta on when the record function may be arriving? I love the software, but this is the one element currently holding me back.

Cheers

I want to suggest you try http://www.showdocument.com – its an alternative tool for dimdim that allows document sharing and web meeting in real-time. all the participants in the session see each others’ drawing, highlights, etc. It is free and requires no installation.

I’ve tried DimDim to host a webinar. It’s good for hosting but the recording was in FLV and most people don’t have FLV viewers. Also, the FLV didn’t seem to work that well. I tried converting it to other formats and it didn’t work.

Also, there are other issues. The sound was a bit choppy for the participants. Someone called in but just got elevator music and never reached us.

Pretty good for free but nothing yet beats GoToWebinar. GTW actually works.

Thanks for the tip on dimdim Lee. I’ll give it a test to see how it works.

It took 8 attempts, but finally got DimDim to work. There was a problem with the plug-ins for both FireFox and IE and I kept getting the same error messages. DimDim wouldn’t allow me to share secure websites using the “share website option.” I also just tried Vyew. That worked the first time.

Thank you Lee, I’ve been looking for a good but free webinar software and this one looks like a winner.
