The Number One Marketing Myth?

by Lee McIntyre on March 22, 2008

There’s a lot of lazy people out there who are only to happy to give you bad marketing advice without a second thought. Here’s one of the worst pieces of advice that seems to get an almost daily airing…

“The Money is in the List”.

How many times have you heard that piece of crazy talk spouted on an online forum? Too many times I’ll bet. Let me tell you right now that the money is NOT in the list. The money is in the relationship with the list.

Sure, having a big list helps but it counts for nothing if you have zero connection with those who receive your emails. So why do people tell you that you need a big list to profit online? I have no idea but I suspect it’s a mixture of laziness and self interest.

This isn’t scientific by any stretch of the imagination but consider this. When I had a list of 603 I was able to finish 3rd in a huge JV contest. The email that led me to 3rd place was my first ever promotional email.

Some others who finished outside the top 10 claim to have lists of 50,000 or more. Yet I was able to outperform them with a tiny list of just 603 people.

Want to know why? Because I worked hard to build a relationship with my subscribers, and because I battled to protect their interests.

The money is not in the list. It’s in the RELATIONSHIP you have with your individual subscribers. Heck, my list is currently only 4,000 strong yet last month I made a profit in excess of $20,000.

Want to know how to build a rock solid relationship with your subscribers that will boost your open rates and increase your profits? Then check out the link below now…

Yep, I can totally grasp what your on about. I hated all newsletters. I presumed that they were all the same, just over the top with sell sell sell and “Time is running out YOU MUST BUY NOW”.
Until I discovered your newsletter, it changed my mind to the point that I have now started my own newsletter with Aweber. But I keep arguing with my self about the Aweber vs Feedburner thing. Is Aweber REALLY good value for money?

Brilliant Lee.

I agree whole heartedly that it’s the relationship you have with the ‘people’ on your list.

I don’t usually buy anything from the list I am on because the contacts are virtually non-existent unless they are trying selling me something.

I can’t remember the last time I got an email from a list I am on where the email was informative without selling or just a note to say how their kid’s birthday went.

There always has to be a push to sell.

Oh I don’t mind the sell either but if the relationship isn’t there I find it hard to pull out my pocket book.

Hey Lee – couldn’t agree with you more… and just now I received another email from a marketer using the phrase as justification for the item he was promoting. I get at least one or two every week from different people tossing that expression around as the “reason” for flogging their wares…

Obviously THEY have no understanding of building relationships!

One an even sadder note, I’ve also been subjected to two broadcast emails this past week from people saying to me to get off of my R$$ and click the link in their email, because they don’t want people on their lists who don’t do anything with the “valuable” information they send out.

Nice way to treat your list eh!

There are nicer ways of cleansing out people who don’t read or buy… the simplest is to start a new list and advise the old subscribers to signup for that if they are interested in continuing.

Cheers
Stephen
