Time to Throw the Laptop Out of the Window!

I’ve become increasingly frustrated with my laptop recently. My desktop is ancient so I do all of my work on the laptop, but the more I use it, the more I realise it’s just not upto the job.

It’s a decent spec, but it just doesn’t have enough juice to comfortably handle the amount of work I throw at it per day. For example, it works fine when running one or two programs, but when I have upto 10 memory intensive applications open at once it frequently just gives up and shuts down.

I’ve had enough so today I went crazy and ordered a really nice new Desktop PC!

I went bampot with the features, but if it allows me to work faster then it will pay for itself in just a few weeks.

I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on it, and am looking forward to saying goodbye to the half hourly crashes that I’m suffering right now.

And if you’re a Lee McIntyre newsletter reader and thought that I gave you lots of free content now….just wait and see how much I send you when I double my productivity with the beast above!

Sounds good Lee! This is the EXACT same as my computer and I need a new one too! Only trouble is that I don’t have the cash to replace it, so I’ll just have to put up with it! :(

Well, to be honest I would actually like a laptop aswell because you can’t move the desktop up or down the stairs whenever you like it!

Lets hope that I can get a new one soon and maybe I’ll too become more productive. You’d be amazed how I can live with it taking 15 minutes just to get IE7 running, never mind Firefox! :D

(Secretly I need a new ‘office’ aswell, but I’ll not go into that at the moment!…)

    Thanks
    Mark

    Lee,

If you can you should break the raid 0 striping. It does not add to the hard drive performance.

Raid 0 can theoretically be useful for audio and/or video production but I have seen too many tests that do not show a significant enough benefit to outweigh the negatives.

What are those negatives? I thought you’d never ask.

Your data is now tied to 2 drives, should one fail you lose everything. You’ve technically halved (not the exact number but you get the idea) the reliability of your drives.

Second windows can take better advantage of 2 independent hard drives. It will intelligently use the drive with the most resources available for many system functions. That can eliminate bottlenecks and even some mystery machine pauses.

I’ve not heard the word bampot before Lee, is that a northern thing?

640GB hard drive…wow! Maybe you should run a competition on this blog to guess how long it takes you to fill it up!

    Cheers…Graham

All my work is done on a 1.6Ghz Toshiba Laptop! 1Mb RAM & a 60GB hard drive!

My 3 year old desktop is more powerful, but is sooo cluttered with old software and files etc. that it’s actually worse!

I always resort to my laptop, which means I have to be much more creative with my use of memory/disk space when getting tasks done!

A new desktop is definitely something I’ll be investing in this year too!

    Good luck with yours, Lee!

Hi Todd - I think I need to consult with you when I buy my new laptop!

It’s too late to change the desktop order, but I’ll take your feedback on board when I grab a laptop later in the year. Many thanks.

Hi Graham - a Bampot? Actually I mistyped and meant a ‘barmpot’. E.g a crazy person with no sense of rationale.

People have heard the term barmpot haven’t they?

Hi John - the spec you mention for your laptop is actually higher that what I work on now. It’s frustrating when it goes slow and locks up isn’t it?!

    Thanks everyone for the comments!

I haven’t heard of barmpot. I guess it is related to barmy, a slang term for mentally irregular.

Hi Lee. Don’t take this as a negative comment but, one would think that someone, (YOU), who has made a boatload of $ and £ wouldn’t suffer a minute with problematic equipment, especialy the equipment you use to earn your living! :???:
Will be looking forward to some new products from you, with the help of your new super-duper-puter!

    Cheers, Mike

    Hi Mike

I SHOULDN’T suffer with bad equipment, but the reality is I’m VERY disorganised!

Getting a new PC wasn’t a question of funds, more a question of just getting organised enough to do it.

I’m pretty rubbish at getting out there and doing the simple things that will make me more productive, and this is something I need to work on.

I’m on a major productivity drive though, and when I get the new PC I’ll force myself to invest the time to install all the gadgets that will speed up my working day.

    That’s the plan anyway!

    Lee…

    2 questions

    Where from ?
    and
    How much ?

I’ll be getting one myself when the end of the month cb cheques have cleared… so any advice and pointers would be appreciated.

    Being non-techy - I’d end up with a dinosaur…

Can you or a reader give an idea of minimum specs we should be asking for these days?

    Cheers
    Randy

    Nice job Lee,

Maybe that one will stop the helpdesk gremlins?

But seriously, congrats on your success.

Hi Ron - Who knows? I’ve been thinking of a way of saying thanks to my best customers, but I was thinking about sending a handwritten note rather than a new PC!

Hi Blogzilla - yeah it’s fast isn’t it? I’ve just checked with Dell and have been told it’s in transit so I’m excited. :)

    Hi Randy - it’s from Dell and it cost….(close your ears) a whopping £915. I know it’s a lot, but I have a feeling I’ll get my money’s worth!

I’ll post a pic the second this bad boy arrives - after a few months of crash, creash, crash, I’m really looking forward to it!

    Hey Lee,
Sounds like a nice rig! I use the other halfs laptop, It’s not too slow either, It’a apecs are below:

    CPU: 1.6 Ghz
    RAM: 2Gb plus 2Gb ReadyBoost
    HDD: 160Gb
    USB: 3 2.0 Speed
    Webcam: 1.3M Pixel
    and it’s Wireless

    Not bad for 3 £500 but it’s a small screen only 15.4″

Hi reycovirt - yeah it’s a crazy price isn’t it. I’d normally go cheap, but as this is what I work on all day I thought this would be a good option.

Hi Hugh - the screen I work on now is that size. I work on the laptop with a comfy keyboard plugged in, but this makes the screen too far away so I’m looking forward to the new setup.

    It’s delivered tomorrow…I can’t wait!

Hi Lee me old chum (I like people to think I’m mates with all the top marketers  )
Why are people who make a living online so lazy when it comes to upgrading their equipment?
I think it’s the same mentality that I had when I was a mechanic. All my customers cars were kept in tip top condition yet my car was falling to bits.
A friend of mine is a great builder, yet his own house is in terrible condition.
We are so focused on making a living that we forget that our tools and possessions are an important part of that process.
As to you paying £915 for your computer, I paid £1400 for a top computer 7 years ago. That computer lasted about 2 years before it became
obsolete  Technology is moving at such a pace that old foggies like me just can’t keep up.

    Ken.
